So I am visiting a friend that goes to UMB and we want to grab a drink after his class.
Are there any good bars, near or around that area?

Thanks

Jacques Cabaret

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 2:47 PM

Okay, so I am planning a Bachelorette for my best friend and wanted to take the group to Jacques Cabaret.  Apparently, even with calling a month in advance there are no tables available to reserve.

A few questions:
- Anyone have any pull at Jacques?  I'd be forever at your mercy...
- Anyone know what the odds of getting 15-20 of us in on a Saturday night in August without a reserved table?

I've never been there so I don't know how much space or how many people they let in above the maximum.

Anyone else have any cleaver ideas for a Bachelorette party in Boston, in addition to the typical get drunk and go to bars?

You see, this best friend took me pole dancing at Gypsy Rose so I wanted to "get back" at her with something as naughty.

The date is Saturday, August 15th and it can't really change...

Movie Musings

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 2:28 PM
I am convinced that Cuba Gooding, Jr. has cost more people the Oscar than any other actor in recent history. Because I'm sure the Oscar voters were thinking, "Well, Eddie Murphy did a pretty good job in Dreamgirls, and he is a talented man - maybe we should give it to Eddie." And then the TV blares: "Snow Dogs 3: The Piddling! Starring ACADEMY AWARD WINNING ACTOR Cuba Gooding, Jr.!"

They shudder a little bit. Then vote for someone else.

Yet the question arose of why Michael Caine, who could not accept his Academy Award for Hannah and her Sisters because he was - no joke - filming Jaws 4, does not fall into this category of Oscar-destroyers. And I think the answer is because while Mister Caine has a reputation for accepting a role from pretty much anyone who pays him, nobody wants to see an distinguished, elderly Englishman do pratfalls and do a bunch of fart jokes. It's not that Oscar winners won't appear in terrible movies, since they clearly do, but rather that those movies should at least be aiming for greatness.

However, I realized that if I had the money, I would immediately commissison a movie to find Michael Caine's limits.

Yes, he'll go where the paycheck is - but I would produce a film called "The Fartsmith," a comedy written by the most discarded of Wayans brothers, wherein Michael Caine would star as the greatest farting superhero in the world. He would wear a skin-tight costume with a puckered anus for a logo, and he would fly like a modified jetpack with the help of a match, and I would do my damndest to see whether I could get Dustin Hoffman to take the method acting role of The Fartsmith's nemesis.

I'd pitch it to him. And every day, I'd rewrite the script to see what sorts of interesting conversations I could get Michael Caine to have with me. I would budget a million dollars simply for impromptu salary negotiations.

Needless to say, the movie would tank, but the real money would come from the DVD and the many hours of featurette extras.

The Ugly American Redux

I really enjoyed this essay in the New York Times Books section about The Ugly American, not least because it makes some of the same arguments that I did after reading it a few years ago.

Tell me my future....

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
I have to force myself to sit down tonight and write an email. I need to do so before heading out to The Tavern at the end of the World on Saturday night. I need to stand up for myself and make it very clear that the abusive texts, emails and voicemails were not acceptable, most significantly, the ones telling me that I should kill myself as soon as possible. He's probably going to get angry and he's probably going to be more abusive, but at least I will have stood up for myself. I don't know what to expect beyond that.

I'm feeling a little bit better about everything and looking forward to moving forward in some different directions. Hopefully things don't blow up in my face on Saturday night. I'm going in prepared for the worst, just in case. I've had far too many panic/anxiety attacks in the past month and certainly don't need to experience more.

On the tail of finding out that my biological father died of some kind of cancer, sometime recently, comes the news that my sister is having a hysterectomy on Monday because she has a large tumor and they won't know if it's cancerous until it's removed and they test it. I feel like a ticking time bomb.

I haven't been eating very well lately and I feel lethargic and my stomach hurts. I need to pull myself far enough out of the depression to at least take better care of myself, mentally and physically.

Two (2) Vans Warped Tour Tickets for Sale

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 12:01 PM
So... I have Vans Warped Tour tickets that I can't use.

Two general admission tickets for next Tuesday, July 21st, at 1PM at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. I'm asking slightly less than face value, so $50 for the pair (LiveNation's selling them for $26.25 each) plus however much shipping is if I have to mail them to get them to you in time.

Price negotiable. Make an offer.

Leave a comment if you're interested!

Cross-posted in various places.

I am trying to analyze the dps rotation of my feral druid cat form. I have a nearly maxed out feral tree (everything involving mangle and shred certainly). I know shred does more damage than mangle if the target both has a bleed effect, and the mangle effect. The trouble is, the bleed form rake for example (or rip), and the mangle effect don't actually last all that long.

The way I see an opening is
Mangle - Savage roar - rake - shred - shred (if I still have energy)
or
Rake - Savage roar - mangle - shred - shred (if I still have energy)
After that, I never seem to be able to keep both a bleed effect (usually rip at this point if it's a boss), and mangle up long enough to do a shred, let alone two.

I just recently considered the alternative though, which I've never done before. Do nothing until my energy is restored. All dps rotation calculations I've read never seem to comment on this tactic. They give dps for shred, dps for rake, for mangle, but no one ever seems to quite be able to capture total dps including energy regen.

I was just wondering how many people do this, wait for energy to go back to 100 before launching a new chain (assuming a reliable tank & spank scenario).

Random bits of me-ness

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 11:27 PM
1. Before embarking on movie watching in K&E's family room, I must, must, MUST tank up on antihistamines.

2. I have been reminded yet again why I can never, ever have a kitty. No matter how much I love them.

3. My period? Again? WTFF? Didn't I just have that???

4. When you are driving across town late at night and searching for something on the radio, the classical station inevitably has some odd, slow, atonal piece of music that just sounds like a bad movie sound track.

5. Can't sleep until antihistamines kick in. Clowns will eat smother me.

Dear people in vault,

When tanking archavon, please move out of the dust clouds. Thanks.
DPS - don't be retarded. Just because it's arch doesn't mean you can afk and do 1k dps.

I have never ever seen archavon enrage. Until today. :| What the fffffuuuuuuuuuuu...

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of May 22, 2008:

During America's first war on Iraq in 1991, I prophesied that one day there'd be a Disneyland in Baghdad. It was a surrealistically sardonic send-up of my native country's imperialism. But now, 17 years later, my absurd prediction is coming true. The same American company that designed the original Disneyland has announced plans to build the Baghdad Zoo and Entertainment Experience. If workers survive bombing, looting, and sniper fire, the first part of the 50-acre amusement park will open this year. While I question whether building a monument to fun is a good idea in an actual war zone, it's an excellent metaphor for you to apply to your personal life. Even if you can't extinguish a certain conflict that has been raging, try to introduce a spirit of play into the proceedings.
